The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has criticized Governor Hyacinth Alia of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for allegedly managing the state like a Catholic parish, undermining democratic values. In a statement by its State Publicity Secretary, Tim Nyor, the PDP accused the Alia-led administration of neglecting transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness. The governor, a former Catholic priest who transitioned to politics during the 2023 elections, was criticized for failing to address critical issues affecting the state.

The PDP stated: “It is evident that the Alia administration functions more like a Catholic parish than a democratic government, disregarding the principles of democracy that citizens deserve. His government has ignored accountability, regulatory control, rule of law, and inclusiveness, opting for secrecy and excluding citizens from key decision-making processes.” The party pointed out the administration’s failure to address pressing issues such as infrastructure decay, inadequate public services, and eroded public trust. Instead, it alleged that the government prioritizes "white elephant projects," including new government houses and universities, while neglecting critical initiatives like the completion of underpass projects in Makurdi and Gboko.

The PDP demanded the governor fulfill campaign promises, such as clearing salary, pension, and gratuity arrears, especially as states now receive higher allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). It also expressed concern over the delay in utilizing these funds to alleviate workers' suffering, some of whom are on strike. The party criticized the administration’s lack of action in resettling displaced persons or addressing insecurity, which it said has worsened under Governor Alia. "His silence on the brutal killings of Benue citizens is unacceptable, and there are no concrete measures in place to prevent these attacks," the statement read.

The PDP further lamented the poor treatment of other government branches, particularly the Benue State House of Assembly, which operates in makeshift facilities with plastic chairs. It accused the governor of neglecting the legislature, freezing state accounts, and favoring certain Assembly members. The statement concluded by calling on Governor Alia to prioritize the collective welfare of citizens over personal interests. “Good governance is not a slogan; it is a necessity for development and citizen well-being. We urge the administration to recommit to democracy, accountability, and active stakeholder participation.” The PDP reaffirmed its commitment to holding the Alia administration accountable and ensuring that the principles of democracy are upheld in Benue State.
