Ismael Ahmed, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, has expressed concerns that the ruling APC and President Bola Tinubu could have easily lost the 2023 presidential election if former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), had united.

Ahmed shared this view during an interview on theMic Onpodcast with Nigerian journalist Seun Okinbaloye. His comments come amid growing speculation that Atiku and Obi may join forces to form a formidable political coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election, potentially posing a significant challenge to President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

When asked about the possibility of such an alliance in 2027, Ahmed acknowledged the threat, emphasizing that he does not take any potential political challenge lightly. He stressed that if Atiku and Obi were to form a united front, it could severely weaken the APC’s chances of securing another victory. He stated, “Yes, it does. I never take any potential threat for a joke in politics. If you look at the combined votes of Atiku and Obi in 2023, we could have easily lost the election if they had been united. God forbid that they come together.”

Ahmed’s remarks underscore the growing political tension as Nigeria looks toward the next presidential race. His caution reflects the intense competition expected between the major political players, and his acknowledgment of the combined strength of Atiku and Obi’s supporters highlights the formidable challenge that the APC may face in 2027.
