The death toll from two separate mass shootings in South Africa has risen to 28, after another victim died in hospital, authorities said on Monday, September 28, 2026.
The attacks occurred within hours of each other in Wedela, near Johannesburg, and Lwandle, near Cape Town. Police are investigating both incidents and searching for those responsible. No arrests had been reported as of Monday.
Death Toll Rises After Wedela Shooting
The first attack happened on Saturday night in Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg.
Police initially reported that 17 people had been killed and at least 15 injured after gunmen attacked a tavern. The death toll from the incident later increased to 18 after another victim died in hospital.
Authorities said the suspects fled in vehicles after the attack. Investigators are working to establish what happened and identify those responsible.
10 Killed in Separate Attack Near Cape Town
A second shooting occurred in Lwandle township, near Cape Town, in the early hours of Sunday.
Police said 10 people were killed and 11 others injured at an entertainment venue. The victims were taken for medical attention, while investigators launched a separate inquiry into the attack.
The two incidents brought the combined death toll to 28.
Police Continue Investigations
South African police have launched investigations and are searching for suspects linked to both shootings.
Authorities have not confirmed the motive behind either attack. Reports have mentioned possible local criminal disputes as lines of inquiry, but these have not been established as the reasons for the shootings.
