Are African Leaders Afraid of Youth Power?

With more than 60 percent of Africa’s population under the age of 25, the continent’s greatest asset is also its most disruptive force. Across Africa, young people are demanding jobs, accountability, and a voice in governance—and many leaders appear deeply uncomfortable with that reality.

From youth-led protests to social media-driven movements, Africa’s young population has demonstrated its ability to mobilize quickly and challenge entrenched power. In response, governments have increasingly turned to protest bans, internet shutdowns, arrests, and restrictive laws, often justified as measures to maintain order.

Critics argue these actions reveal a fear of losing political control. Despite campaign promises to empower young people, leadership structures across the continent remain dominated by older elites, leaving youth largely excluded from decision-making.

Supporters of firm government action say stability must be preserved and warn that youth movements can be exploited or turn violent. But activists counter that silencing young voices only deepens frustration, pushing engagement away from democratic channels.

The core question remains unresolved: Are African leaders protecting stability — or protecting their grip on power?

As Africa’s youth population continues to grow, so does its influence. Whether leaders choose inclusion or suppression may define the continent’s political future.
