Coup Tensions Rise in West Africa as Regional Leaders Demand Return to Civilian Rule

Political tensions in West Africa escalated this week as ECOWAS leaders renewed calls for military governments in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to restore democratic rule.

The Sahel has experienced multiple coups since 2020, driven by security crises, weakened institutions, and frustration over corruption. While junta leaders argue they need more time to stabilize their countries, regional governments insist that prolonged military rule undermines democratic progress.

ECOWAS is considering reinstating economic and travel sanctions if no “credible transition plans” are presented in the coming months.

Security analysts warn that the political vacuum in the Sahel risks fueling extremist activity and worsening humanitarian conditions.
