Novak Djokovic employs Andy Murray as his new coach after 25 years of rivalry
Tennis star Novak Djokovic has announced that his longtime rival, Andy Murray, will join his coaching team for the offseason and the Australian Open. Murray, who retired after the 2024 Olympic Games, is transitioning into a new role by teaming up with Djokovic.
“We’ve been rivals since we were kids—25 years of pushing each other to our limits and sharing some of the most epic battles in tennis,” Djokovic said in a video shared on social media. “They called us game changers, risk takers, history makers. I thought our story was over, but it turns out there’s one more chapter. Welcome to the team, coach Andy Murray.”
Djokovic, who holds a record 24 Grand Slam titles, aims to extend his tally to 25 at the Australian Open with Murray's support. “I’m excited to have one of my greatest rivals on my side as a coach,” Djokovic said in a statement via the Associated Press. “I look forward to starting the season in Australia alongside Andy, with whom I’ve shared so many special moments on Australian soil.”
Murray also expressed enthusiasm for his new role: “I’m joining Novak’s team during the offseason to help him prepare for the Australian Open,” he said. “I’m excited to work on the same side of the net as Novak and help him achieve his goals.” During his playing career, Murray won three Grand Slam titles and two Olympic gold medals, leaving a lasting mark on the sport.
