Kwara school teachers allegedly assault female Corps member 'for not greeting them properly'
A female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Kwara State was reportedly assaulted by teachers at Government Day Junior Secondary School in the Kulende area of Ilorin for allegedly not greeting them properly. According to the Nigerian Tribune, the incident occurred on Thursday, November 28, 2024, when the corps member, whose name has been withheld, visited the school to collect her clearance letter. Witnesses claimed that a teacher attacked her, tearing her NYSC white T-shirt, and was joined by another teacher who allegedly slapped her.
Morakinyo Oladipo, the Head of Information and Public Relations for NYSC in Kwara State, confirmed the incident and stated that the scheme is taking steps to seek redress. He also noted that the state government has been informed through the Ministry of Youth, the supervising ministry. To support the victim, Oladipo said the corps member would be reposted to another location to help her recover from the trauma.
“It is true, and we are preparing a rejoinder,” Oladipo said, adding that all necessary measures are being taken to address the matter. He expressed the NYSC’s displeasure and emphasized that the state government had taken immediate action since the news broke. On possible consequences for the teachers involved, Oladipo assured that the law would take its course. “We expect proper investigation and action against those who assaulted the corps member. The NYSC will ensure that all lawful steps are taken to hold them accountable,” he added.
