Obasanjo reacts after Gowon said that He pleaded with Abacha not to kill him
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has responded to a revelation by former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd.), who claimed he pleaded with the late military ruler, General Sani Abacha, to spare Obasanjo’s life.
Obasanjo had been imprisoned during Abacha’s regime over an alleged coup plot. Speaking at the first Plateau Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival held at the 10 Commandments Prayer Altar in Du, Jos South LGA, Gowon disclosed that he had written to Abacha, urging him to spare Obasanjo. He explained that in the letter, delivered to Abacha via his wife at night, he reminded Abacha that leadership is a divine responsibility meant for good, not harm. Gowon noted that events took a turn after the letter, and expressed gratitude that Obasanjo not only survived imprisonment but went on to become Nigeria’s president in 1999.
Reacting the following day at the same event, Obasanjo revealed he was unaware of Gowon’s efforts until the previous day. He acknowledged Gowon’s intervention, stating that after his release in 1998 following Abacha’s death, he had traveled widely to thank those who supported him. However, Gowon’s role was news to him.
“I want to thank my boss, General Yakubu Gowon, for his revelation yesterday. After my release, I took the opportunity to thank friends, both within and outside the country, who prayed and appealed for my freedom. But I didn’t know about your personal letter until you mentioned it. I deeply appreciate it,” Obasanjo said.
