You’ll pay huge price for allowing illegal migrants into US’ — Trump vows to punish Canada, Mexico on Day 1 of inauguration
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to impose a 25% tariff on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada on his first day in office. In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump claimed, “Thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing crime and drugs at unprecedented levels.” He vowed that the tariff would remain in effect until the flow of illegal drugs, particularly fentanyl, and undocumented migrants into the U.S. is stopped. Trump added, “Both Mexico and Canada have the power to solve this problem easily. Until they do, they must pay a very big price.”
Additionally, Trump announced plans to impose an extra 10% tariff on Chinese imports, citing China's failure to stop the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. “Despite promises to enforce the death penalty for drug dealers, China has not followed through,” Trump wrote, adding that this tariff would remain until China addresses the issue.
During his campaign, Trump repeatedly promised to declare a national emergency to combat illegal immigration and utilize military resources to deport a record number of undocumented migrants. Economists, however, warn that such tariffs could raise consumer prices, increase inflation, and lead to higher interest rates in the U.S.
