Manchester City star, Rodri insists he 'cannot respect' Real Madrid after Ballon d'Or snub
Manchester City midfielder Rodri has expressed his disappointment with Real Madrid, stating he has lost "respect" for the club after they boycotted the Ballon d'Or ceremony. The Spanish midfielder was unexpectedly crowned the best player in the world at the October event, surprising many who had anticipated Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior to win.
When it was revealed that Rodri had been chosen as the winner, Real Madrid reportedly reacted by instructing their representatives, including Vinícius, not to attend the ceremony at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. The club had hoped that if Vinícius did not win, right-back Dani Carvajal might receive the honor following his success in La Liga, the Champions League, and the Euros.
Rodri criticized Real Madrid’s decision, saying, “I cannot respect their choice not to attend the ceremony.” Reflecting on the experience, he added, “Winning the Ballon d’Or is indescribable. In my generation, we’ve only seen two players—Messi and Ronaldo—dominate the trophy.” He emphasized the importance of sportsmanship, saying, “Winning is important, but knowing how to lose is just as vital. It was my moment, and I didn’t want to focus on others. Those who were there to support me my club, my family made it an incredible occasion.”
