A woman who became a police officer to seek justice for her murdered father helped capture his killer 25 years after the crime. Gislayne Silva de Deus, from Boa Vista in northern Brazil, was just nine years old when her father, Givaldo, was shot and killed in a bar in 1999 over a debt of £20.

The killer, Raimundo Alves Gomes, initially took Givaldo to the hospital but vanished afterward. Though Gomes was caught, tried, and sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2013, he remained free during a series of appeals. When his final appeal was denied in 2016, a warrant was issued for his arrest, but he disappeared once again.

This was devastating for Gislayne, who was in her late 20s and working as a lawyer at the time. She and her family lived in constant uncertainty, wondering if they would ever find him.

In 2022, Gislayne became a prison officer, hoping one day she would see Gomes arrive to serve his sentence. Later that year, an uncle spotted Gomes in the same city where the murder took place, but Gomes evaded arrest once again.

Determined, Gislayne joined the Civil Police and became part of the homicide unit in July 2023. She helped gather information on Gomes' whereabouts and issued the order for his arrest.

At 35, Gislayne finally confronted her father’s killer at the police station, telling him, "It’s because of me that you are here. You are now going to pay." This emotional moment was filmed and shared online.

Gislayne recalled how difficult it was to face him, saying, "When I saw the man responsible for my dad’s death in handcuffs, I couldn’t hold back the tears. It was an explosion of emotions—tears of relief—because it felt like this day would never come."

She described her father as an honest, hardworking man who valued education and was always close to his children. She and her sisters endured hard times after his death, but their mother’s guidance helped them stay on the right path.
