A renowned British photojournalist, Paul Lowe, was allegedly murdered by his son on a popular hiking trail in California. Lowe, 60, who documented conflicts such as the siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian war, was found dead on October 12 in the San Gabriel Mountains. Records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner indicate he died from a stab wound to the neck.

Lowe’s 19-year-old son, Emir, has been charged with one count of murder and is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Wednesday, October 16, at the West Covina Courthouse.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed, "The homicide bureau presented the case to the District Attorney’s Office for consideration. The District Attorney has filed one count of murder against Emir Lowe for the death of his father, Christian Paul Lowe. No further details are available at this time."

The incident reportedly took place around 3:28 p.m. on Mount Baldy Road, near Stoddard Canyon Falls. According to a statement from the sheriff’s department, officers responding to a call about an assault with a deadly weapon discovered an adult male with trauma to his upper torso. The San Bernardino Fire Department declared the victim dead at the scene.

A witness saw a male suspect driving away from the scene, who was later involved in a single-car crash a few miles away. The suspect was detained for further investigation, and authorities confirmed the case is ongoing.

King’s College London, where Lowe was a visiting professor in the Department of War Studies, expressed deep sorrow at his death. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the institution said: "We are deeply saddened by the news of Professor Paul Lowe’s passing. Paul was an award-winning photojournalist and a Professor of Photojournalism at the University of the Arts London. His work on the Siege of Sarajevo and efforts toward reconciliation left a lasting impact. His energy, creativity, and warmth will be sorely missed."

The university extended its condolences to Lowe's family during this difficult time.
