Former Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel has been named England's manager, starting from January 1, 2025. The 51-year-old German, who has signed an 18-month contract, becomes the third non-British permanent manager of the men's national team, following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Gareth Southgate stepped down in July after England's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Lee Carsley, the interim manager since August, will continue to lead the team for the upcoming Nations League games against Greece and the Republic of Ireland next month.

Tuchel, who departed Bayern Munich at the end of last season, expressed his pride in taking on the role: "I am deeply honored to be given the responsibility of managing the England team. I've always felt a personal connection to football in this country, which has already given me incredible moments. It’s a great privilege to represent England and to work with this special, talented group of players."

Football Association Chief Executive Mark Bullingham said they had hired "one of the world's best coaches" and added, "Thomas and the team are focused on giving us the best chance to win the 2026 World Cup."

England, who haven't won a major trophy since the 1966 World Cup, will begin their qualifying campaign for the 2026 tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States next year.

Tuchel has previously managed Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, PSG, and Chelsea. He led Chelsea to four cup finals, winning the Champions League before being dismissed in September 2022. He also won the DFB-Pokal with Dortmund in 2017, two Ligue 1 titles with PSG, and the Bundesliga with Bayern in 2023.
